Description
Adenovirus-Associated Virus (AAV): transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of numerous AAV particles with a few larger, adenovirus particles also visible (as hexagonal forms). AAV belongs to the parvovirus group, the smallest of the DNA- containing viruses. It is unable to replicate by itself, needing the presence of an adenovirus (or in some instances a herpesvirus) to compensate for some obscure defects in its make-up. These are believed to lie in the DNA, although not due to a straightforward lack, since AAV contains more DNA than some other complete viruses. Magnification: x100,000 at 8x10-inch size.
