Description
Adenovirus. Computer artwork showing the external protein structure of an adenovirus particle. Adenoviruses are the largest viruses not to have a protein coat covering their capsid. The capsid is icosahedral, having 20 triangular faces made up of regular arrangements of hexon capsomeres. Penton capsomeres make up the 12 vertices, with a fibre and knob structure protruding from each. Inside the capsid is the genetic material (DNA, not shown). Adenoviruses commonly cause infections of the upper respiratory tract and eyes.
