Description
Creamware drug jar for Syr:Rhei. This dates from the 19th century. Creamware is a refined earthenware finished with a cream coloured glaze. It was traditionally produced by potters in Staffordshire, England and was popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Decorated jars such as this one were used to store medicines such as pills, syrups and oils. They would be displayed in apothecaries, and the elaborate decorations reflected the prosperity of the apothecary store.
