Description
Skin. Light micrograph of a section through a human fingertip showing the structure of the skin. The epidermis consists of an outer layer of dead keratinised cells (brown), which act as a protective barrier, and an inner layer of living cells (yellow). Below this is the dermis, a layer of connective tissue (pink), blood vessels (red) and sweat glands (yellow). Below this is adipose (fat) tissue (very pale pink). Magnification: x5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
