Description
Martian surface. Image from NASA's Mars exploration rover Opportunity of rocks covered by a rind-like layer (blue and olive) on the Martian surface. The two holes were made with the rover's rock abrasion tool to allow chemical analysis of the underlying material. Drilling produced iron- rich dust (red). The rind and rock were found to have similar overall chemistry. Opportunity and its sister rover Spirit were launched in the summer of 2003. Opportunity landed on Mars on 24 January 2004. Its mission is to analyse soil and rocks and search for water. Image taken on Opportunity's 561st Martian day, 22 August 2005.
