Description
Cross section of 40 year old natural hot water pipe, Reykjavik Iceland. Despite its age the interior of the pipe has hardly any mineral deposit. Water comes from a low temperature ( about 80 degrees centigrade) borehole source and despite the discernible smell of hydrogen sulfide there is very low dissolved mineral in the water. The steel pipe is enclosed in a plastic pipe filled with a (now part melted) insulation foam filler. The water is used for heating, washing, hot tubs and the waste water keeps pavements ice free in winter. The chemical composition may include silicon dioxide, sodium, potassium, calcium, hydrogen sulfide, sulfate, chlorine, carbon dioxide, fluorine and magnesium.
