Italian musical pipes, 18th-century artwork. This artwork accompanied a letter sent by John Moir to Scottish general and antiquarian Robert Melvill (1723-1809). Moir described seeing a man playing an instrument of this type in 1789 in a town in Lombardy, in what is now northern Italy. Published in Volume 11 (1792) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
