Description
Copper foundry. Molten copper (orange) inside moulds in a sand-filled barrel. The metal has been melted inside a furnace and poured into the mould to create a copper object in the shape of the mould. The process of using a molten material in this way is known as casting. Copper is a chemical element and a metal, with a melting point of 1084 degrees Celsius. Copper is an easily worked metal that is used extensively in industry, in metal statues, and in alloys. Photographed in the UK. See images T810/256-258 for a sequence showing the pouring of the molten copper into the moulds. T810/260 shows the furnace, while T807/074 shows the mould and the finished product.
