Description
Bingham Canyon copper mine. Section of the open-pit mining operations of Utah Copper Company at Bingham Canyon copper mine, Utah, USA. This mine opened in 1906, and by 1912 it had become the largest industrial mining complex in the world. It has set records for the deepest open-pit mine in the world. It is managed by Kennecott Copper Corporation (now Kennecott Utah Copper), and was acquired by the Rio Tinto group in 1989. The excavations are nearly a kilometre deep and four kilometres across. Photographed in November 1942 by US photographer Andreas Feininger (1906-1999).
