Description
International Space Station (ISS) orbiting above the Tien Shan mountains on the Kyrgystan-China border. Dark solar panels extend out from the ISS to provide power. The modules (from left to right) are Unity, Zarya and Zvezda. A Progress supply ship (centre right) is docked to Zvezda. The ISS is a joint effort between NASA, ESA, the Russian space agency, Canada, Japan and Brazil. It orbits at an altitude of 350 kilometres and will be over 100 metres in length. It has been manned since October 2000 and is scheduled for completion in 2004. Photographed from the orbiting Space Shuttle Atlantis during mission STS-106 (8-20 September 2000) to continue constructing the ISS.
