Description
Maize stem. Polarised light micrograph of a section through the stem of a maize (corn, Zea mays) plant, showing six long vascular bundles surrounded by the box-shaped cells of parenchyma tissue. On the outside of each bundle are tracheids and small vessels (pale blue with white transverse lines). In the centre of each is a spiral vessel (dark blue and white) and the rest of the tissue is the phloem (purple). Magnification: x5 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
