Description
International Space Station (ISS), 16th February 2001, over South America. Snow-capped mountains and fjords are seen in southern Chile at lower left. The Destiny laboratory (silver cylinder, lower centre) was added during mission STS-98, flown by the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The bottom to top sequence of modules continues through Unity, Zarya and Zvezda, ending in the Soyuz escape pod. Arrays of solar panels surround the ISS. The ISS is a joint effort between NASA, ESA, the Russian space agency, Canada, Japan and Brazil. It orbits at an altitude of 350 kilometres and will be over 100 metres in length. It has been manned since late 2000 and is scheduled for completion in 2004.
