Description
Intestinal lining. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through the epithelial lining of the small intestine, showing the densely packed microvilli (top). These tiny structures form a dense brush-like covering that increases the absorptive surface area of the cells lining the small intestine, through which the cells absorb nutrients from digested food. A goblet cell (purple) can also be seen. Goblet cells secrete mucus (dark green) to protect the lining of the intestine. Magnification: x1500 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
