Description
Dermoid ovarian cyst. Coloured pelvic ultrasound scan of a 39-year-old woman, with a dense area on the scan (lower left) suggesting the presence of a dermoid ovarian cyst. A dermoid, or teratoma, ovarian cyst is a benign (non-cancerous) cyst that arises from germ (sex) cells. Because germ cells develop into all the cells of the body, the cyst can contain a variety of different tissues, including bone, tooth and hair. Treatment is with surgical removal of the cyst. The dimensions of the cyst are 52 by 58 millimetres. This scan orientation is a right median parasagittal section.
