Description
Lead ion collisions. Electronic display of high energy lead ion collisions from the north area 49 (NA49) experiment at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. The collision, produced after the ions had been accelerated ?to a energy of 32 TeV (tera electron volts) in the super-proton-synchrotron (SPS) accelerator, has lead to the liberation of subatomic particles. The analysis of such collisions during the NA49 experiment produced some of the first evidence for production of quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a state thought to have existed for the first few microseconds after the Big Bang.
