William Osler teaching medicine, 1900s. Canadian physician William Osler (1849-1919) conducting a clinic at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Canada, watched by numerous students and professors. This clinic took place prior to Osler leaving his position at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA, to take the position of Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University. Osler began his career at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, before becoming the first professor of medicine (1889) at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Considered the father of modern medicine, he founded the practice of student residency in hospitals. Photographed in 1905.
