Ashfall Fossil Beds. Exploration trenches in volcanic ash beds at the Ashfall Fossil Beds, part of Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park near Royal, Nebraska, USA. This site is where ash from an erupting volcano covered the area nearly 12 million years ago during the Miocene. Trenches in the rock have been cut by hand to determine the location of animals fossilised after being buried by the ash. Photographed in 2014.
