Description
Stone axe head. Modern polished stone axe head, or celt, from West Papua, Indonesia. Remote parts of the western Pacific island of New Guinea still retain a primitive Stone Age culture where blades like this are often used for ceremonial purposes. The style is essentially identical to that of prehistoric Neolithic tools. The word celt is named after the Latin celtis, meaning a chisel. This specimen measures 16 centimetres x 6 centimetres.
