Description
Springtail antenna. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of part of an antenna from a springtail (order Collembola). Springtails are primitive flightless insects, dating back some 300 million years in the fossil record. They lack external reproductive appendages and only have primitive eyes. The antennae (sensory structures that are mounted on the head) are also primitive. The common name is derived from the habit of some species of using their tails to spring into the air. Magnification x165 at 6x7cm size.
