Description
Peuerbach planetary models. These celestial spheres, with Latin titles, are based on the planetary models proposed by Georg von Peuerbach (1423-1461), an Austrian astronomer whose 1472 work on planetary theories was an attempt to reconcile the theories of Aristotle and Ptolemy. The model on the left includes zodiacal symbols on a sphere labelled the ecliptic. The title at right includes the symbols for the planets Venus and Mercury. This artwork is from the later work Commentaries on George Peurbach's New Theories of the Planets (1556) by the Austrian astronomer and scholar Erasmus Oswald Schreckenfuchs (1511-1579).
