Description
Parkinson's disease research. Fluorescent deconvolution micrograph of cultured dopaminergic neurons (nerve cells) used in research into Parkinson's disease. Glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is red. Dopaminergic neurons are cells whose primary neurotransmitter is dopamine. It is the death of these cells that leads to the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. These symptoms include tremor, muscular rigidity, poor balance and depression. GDNF promotes the survival and differentiation of dopaminergic neurons and therefore may be useful as a treatment. Magnification: x600 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
