Description
Genetics research, mid-20th century. Female researchers working in a biology laboratory using microscopes to prepare and study samples. This photograph is from the papers of Croatian-US geneticist Milislav Demerec who was the director of the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Department of Genetics (later Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory), New York, USA, from 1941 to 1960. Subjects studied in such laboratories include the genetics of plants, including crops such as maize, the genetics of Drosophila fruit flies (a standard model organism), and the genetics of microbes such as fungi, as well as bacteria and their viruses (bacteriophages).
