Description
Great Red Spot. Coloured Galileo spacecraft image of Jupiter's Great Red Spot (GRS), with the tones approximating to natural colours. The GRS is a large storm system which has been visible to observers on Earth for hundreds of years. It is about 26,000km long and 13,000 km wide. The GRS appears to be very stable, even though the anti- clockwise winds inside it blow at up to 400 kilometres an hour. This image was made by combining near-infrared and violet light observed by Galileo's imaging system on June 26 1996. This picture is about 100 times more detailed than images obtainable from Earth-based telescopes.
