Description
European hornet (Vespa crabro), the largest of the European wasps. It has the three insect body areas of a head (top centre), thorax (upper centre) and abdomen (lower centre). Other structures common to all insects include the eyes and antennae found on the head, and the three pairs of segmented legs on the thorax. A hornet's legs also carry spines and claws. A hornet's two pairs of wings, supported by veins, are attached to the thorax, and make a loud buzzing sound in flight. Hornets are social wasps. A queen starts a colony and raises worker wasps to continue building a nest and gathering insects to feed her young. Hornets can reach 35mm in size. A hornet sting is painful, but only used in defence.
