Description
Edmund Beecher Wilson (1856-1939), US cell biologist, reading at his desk. Wilson obtained his doctorate in biology at Johns Hopkins University in 1881. Most of his career was spent at Columbia University, New York, USA, from 1891 to his retirement in 1928. Wilson pioneered cell biology as a scientific discipline in the USA. He authored the famous textbook 'The Cell in Development and Inheritance' (1896) which was issued in a third edition in 1925. Wilson was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1921, and awarded the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal (1925) from the National Academy of Sciences. Photographed circa 1924.
