Description
Diagram showing the interior of the terrestrial planet Mars. The outermost layer is the crust, which at 75 miles (120 km) deep is much thicker than the Earth's crust. There are no plate tectonics. The mantle, immediately below the crust, is a thick shell of rocks such as olivine, which is made from silicate, iron and magnesium. Lastly there is a substantial core which occupies 30 to 40 per cent of the planet's radius. It is lighter than Earth's core, so it's probably made up mostly of iron or iron sulphide.
