Description
Desert iguana. View of a desert iguana (Dipsosaurus dorsalis) sunning itself on a rock. These lizards live in Mexico and the south-western USA, inhabiting dry areas, and feeding on plants, insects and occasionally carrion. They thrive in higher temperatures than most reptiles, and are still active at almost 50 degrees Celsius. They spend the night in shelters under rocks or shrubs. When startled, they run away on their back legs, and can reach speeds of 25 kilometres per hour. Photographed in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California, USA.
