Description
Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) female (cow) with her pup. The pup (left) is a few months old and has moulted to show its silver-grey adult coat that will later darken to brown. The female gives birth to a single pup and feeds it with milk for four months. While producing milk, she has to feed to maintain a supply. She spends 3-5 days feeding at sea, mostly on krill, and then spends several days nursing her pup. While she is away, the pup hides among rocks. They call out to find each other when she returns. These seals are found in subantarctic waters. Photographed on Bird Island, South Georgia, southern Atlantic Ocean.
