Description
San Andreas fault. Infrared satellite image of part of the San Andreas fault, California, USA. North is at top. Fields (red and light blue) are seen either side of the mountains at centre. There are two main fault zones and associated mountain ranges. The San Andreas fault runs across the bottom of the image. The Garlock fault runs diagonally down from upper right, meeting the San Andreas fault at lower centre. The San Andreas fault extends most of the length of California, and causes major earthquakes in the region. Photographed on 20 April 1987.
