Description
Wright brothers Kitty Hawk glider. US aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright (right, 1867-1912) and local fisherman Daniel Tate (left), flying the Wright brothers' 1902 glider as a kite on a beach near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA. US aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright carried out a series of glider tests from 1900 to 1902, prior to their first successful flight in a heaver-than-air machine (17 December 1903). The gliders were also flown as kites during testing. The 1902 glider was 4.9 metres long and had a wingspan of 9.8 metres. Various members of the Tate family hosted or assisted the Wrights during their tests at Kitty Hawk. Photographed on 19 September 1902.
