Description
Wrecked Wright brothers glider. Crumpled glider designed and flown by the Wright brothers, wrecked in 1900 by the wind on a beach near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA. US aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright carried out a series of glider tests from 1900 to 1902, prior to their first successful flight in a heaver-than-air machine (17 December 1903). The gliders carried a single pilot, but were also flown as kites during testing. This glider was flown from a wooden derrick, but the mooring ropes (visible here) broke away in strong wings and the glider was wrecked. Photographed at Hill of the Wreck (named after a shipwreck) on 10 October 1900.
