Description
Worldview of Thales of Miletus. The Ancient Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus (c.624 to c.546 BC) was a mathematician, astronomer, and one of the first to advance scientific viewpoints. He is reported to have predicted a solar eclipse in 585 BC, and tried to explain earthquakes. He put forward his view that the Earth was a disc floating in a vast ocean, enclosed within a sphere containing all the stars. The terrain seen in the illustration is the Mediterranean region, the known world according to the maps of the time.
