Woolf steam engine, 19th century. Illustration of the machine beam (balance) and rotary mechanism of a Woolf steam engine. Shown here is the layout of the wheel the beam, and the connecting rod and crank. British engineer Arthur Woolf (1766-1837) patented a high-pressure compound steam engine design in 1804. Artwork from 'Chaudieres et Machines a Vapeur' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
