Description
Women carrying firewood, accompanied by children, one of whom is also carrying firewood. This is a village in Papua New Guinea, where society is patriarchal. Women gather firewood and do the carrying, with straps being used to carry the weight of the load on the forehead. The bags used are known as bilum bags, traditionally made from leaves of the sago palm tree. Photographed in the Dreikkir region, a remote area of Papua New Guinea's East Sepik Province.
