Description
Wolfgang Pauli and Nobel laureates, 1956. At centre, Austrian-Swiss physicist Wolfgang Pauli (1900-1958) is speaking at the 6th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, held from 25 to 29 June 1956 in Lindau, Germany. He is giving the traditional 'cockchafer speech'. At left is German biochemist Adolf Butenandt (1903-1995), who attended the Lindau Meetings over 30 times. At right is Indian physicist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (1888-1970). This was the only time Pauli and Raman attended the Lindau Meetings. Pauli was awarded the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on quantum mechanics. Butenandt was awarded a share of the 1939 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on sex hormones. Raman was awarded the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on light scattering.
