Description
Winged ant, coloured environmental scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The compound eye (blue) are either side of the head, and the wings are at right. Ants evolved from a wasp-like creature which began to dig its nest in the ground. Over time, these wasps lost their wings to become the ants that exist today, but some of the reproductive stages of the life cycle of some ants are still winged. Ants are social insects that live in colonies that can contain millions of individuals. They are found worldwide in a diverse range of habitats.
