Description
William Stukeley (1687-1765), English antiquarian, physician, and author. Stukeley studied at Cambridge, then studied medicine in London. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1717, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1720. His main works concerned the prehistoric sites of Stonehenge and Avebury. In 1718, he helped establish the Society of Antiquaries of London, of which he was secretary and fellow. He also wrote a 1752 memoir of his friend, the English physicist Isaac Newton. Artwork from Nichols's 'Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century', an 8-volume work published between 1817 and 1858.
