Description
William Walker Martin (1860-1942), American cyclist, on a penny farthing bicycle. William Martin was an amateur cyclist who, turning professional in 1890, won a six-day race at Madison Square Garden, New York, in 1891. It was described as the long-distance championship of the world and he earned £1000 in gold for the victory. In December 1894 he won both the 10-mile and 20-mile world championships and between 1895 and 1901 Martin rode in every Australian colony, and was said to have won 249 races.
