Description
Wilfred Thomason Grenfell (1865-1940), British physician and missionary, steering a boat. Grenfell joined the National Mission for Deep-Sea Fishermen in 1889 and organised the first North Sea hospital ship. He then founded medical missions in Labrador and Newfoundland, Canada, where the population received only one visit a year. His first hospital opened at Battle Harbour in 1893 and soon expanded to include an orphanage and the first co-operatives in the region. In 1912 the International Grenfell Association was formed. Grenfell was made Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (KCMG) in 1927. Photographed circa 1930.
