Description
Effect of chloral hydrate on spiders. Computer artwork of the orb web of a garden spider (Araneus diadematus) exposed to chloral hydrate (C2.H.Cl3.O). This drug is a sedative used for the treatment of insomnia. A normal orb web consists of radiating threads and a sticky spiral hub (see Z430/519). A spider fed on chloral hydrate-dosed flies produces an incomplete web, with the spiral hub completely absent. Originally published in NASA Tech Briefs, April 1995.
