Description
Waterspouts. 18th-century artwork of waterspouts observed at St Jago de la Vega in Jamaica, in the Caribbean. Waterspouts are the equivalent over water to tornadoes on land. They are generally weaker than tornadoes, but strong waterspouts capable of causing death and destruction are possible. St Jago de la Vaga was the former name of Spanish Town, and was the capital of Jamaica from 1534 to 1872. This artwork is from the December 1783 issue of 'The Gentleman's Magazine', a monthly magazine founded in London in 1731.
