Description
Historical X-ray diagnosis. Early 20th century watercolour by French artist Fargeot, showing an X-ray emitter being used on a soldier during World War I. The emitter directs a beam of X-rays onto the ankle of the patient while his foot rests on a photographic plate. Both the radiographer and patient are unprotected against stray X-rays, and the device itself has no proper casing of lead. Wilhelm Roentgen discovered X-rays in 1895, and by the first World War this technology was being used for medical diagnosis.
