Description
Oral specimen collection device. Close-up of a woman using an oral specimen collection device to collect a sample of oral fluid. The collecting pad is held between the lower cheek and gum for two to five minutes to absorb oral fluid. This fluid has a different composition to saliva. The pad is then placed in a collection vial, which contains preservatives that stabilize the sample for up to 21 days. The sample is then transported to a laboratory for testing. Typical tests include screening for tobacco use and cocaine abuse. For a sequence showing the use of this device to take a sample, see images C025/4850 to C025/4853.
