Description
Volcanic field, Saudi Arabia, ISS image. Image taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) of the Harrat Khaybar volcanic field, north of Medina, Saudi Arabia. This lava field was formed over the past five million years. The most recent eruptions took place between 600-700AD. Dark regions were formed from fluid basalt lava flows and lighter coloured areas were formed from more viscous, silica rich lava, known as rhyolite. Sand and silt form the remaining areas. Photographed on the 31st March 2008 from the International Space Station (ISS) by an Expedition 16 crew member.
