Gobi Desert and Qilian Mountains. View from a Space Shuttle in Earth orbit looking south-west over part of the Gobi Desert (foreground) in China. At centre are the Qilian Mountains (snow-capped), forming the border between the provinces of Qinghai (upper frame) and Gansu (lower frame). Beyond the mountains is Qinghai Lake, an alkaline salt lake and the largest lake in China. Photographed from the Space Shuttle Endeavour in February 2000, during mission STS-99.
