Description
Virgo cluster galaxies. Optical image of several galaxies in the heart of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. North is towards lower right. The bright galaxy at lower left is M84 (NGC 4374), the similar one at lower right is M86 (NGC 4406). At upper centre is the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4388, and at upper right is the face-on barred spiral galaxy NGC 4413. The elliptical galaxy just left of centre is NGC 4387. The Virgo (or Coma- Virgo) cluster is a huge cluster of around 2000 galaxies. It is the largest nearby cluster, lying around 60 million light years from our Milky Way galaxy.
