Description
Scarlet macaw. View of the head and chest of a scarlet macaw (Ara macao). The scarlet macaw lives in the forests of Central and northern South America. They live in large flocks, usually made up of several pairs of birds. They nest in holes in the trunks of forest trees. They eat a variety of foods, including fruits, seeds and nuts. They use their large, powerful beaks to crack open tough nutshells. These birds used to be very popular as pets, and were extensively hunted for export. They are famous for their mimicking ability, often being able to reproduce whole sentences. Photographed at the Marenco Biological Station, Costa Rica.
