Description
Uranus rings and moons. Voyager 2 image of Uranus' rings and two of its moons, taken on 21 January 1986. This was the first time these two moons, Cordelia (1986U7) and Ophelia (1986U8), had been imaged. All nine of the known rings are visible here. The rings, which are formed of rock and ice, are very thin, each being only a few kilometres wide and around 100 metres thick. Uranus, the seventh planet from the Sun, is a gas giant, composed mainly of hydrogen and helium with some methane. Uranus has a diameter of 51,000 kilometres, four times that of the Earth. Voyager 2 was a space probe sent to image the outer solar system. It was launched on 20 August 1977 and passed Uranus at its closet point on 24 January 1986.
