Description
Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), Danish astronomer, portrayed aged 40 on a pedestal with astronomical instruments and a Latin inscription. Brahe is considered the greatest astronomical observer of the pre-telescopic era. The son of a nobleman, he designed and built his own instruments and observatories with the patronage of the royalty of Europe. Brahe's two greatest achievements were the observation of a supernova in 1572 and his life's work, a catalogue of 777 star positions. This artwork by Philipp Andreas Kilian (1714-1759) is from Historia Coelestis (1666) by the German astronomer Albert Curtz (1600â??1671).
