Description
Troughton reflecting circle, 19th-century illustration. This device, developed by British instrument maker Edward Troughton (1753-1835), allows three simultaneous readings of angular distance to be obtained. It was used in celestial navigation and surveying. The first reflecting circle had been invented in 1752. Artwork from 'The Cycle of Celestial Objects continued at the Hartwell Observatory to 1859' (1860) by British astronomer William Henry Smyth (1788-1865).
